NCDD conference endorses National Survey

On 18 September 2009 the NCDD convened a national conference to discuss the results of the Dutch national digital preservation survey as published in the report A future for our digital memory. Some one-hundred representatives of digital data producing and archiving institutions came to The Hague, where they unanimously endorsed the results of the survey and the report.
Questions remain, nevertheless, as to the course which should be taken to address the problems laid bare in the report. Conference participants called for pragmatism rather than high-level institutional solutions which take much time to yield results. René Smit, the NCDD's chairman, stressed, however, that institutional and governmental commitment is called for to empower a process which may otherwise lose momentum when the going gets rough.
The Board of the NCDD will discuss the results of both the survey and the conference and is expected to publish a strategy document by the end of 2009.
